FOREST Hill youngsters are loving a scheme in which they run or walk a mile every single school day.
The “Daily Mile” has been so enthusiastically embraced at St George’s CE Primary School in Perry Vale pupil’s have collectively clocked up enough miles to reach Australia
Head teacher Geraldine Constable introduce the activity last September after seeing is impact in other schools. The scheme was created by Elaine Wyllie, a primary school headteacher in Scotland, who wanted to tackle poor levels of fitness in her school.
Ms Constable said: “To me it seemed the ideal way to allow our children to have an opportunity to engage in daily exercise additional to their PE lessons and playtimes. We have found that doing the mile during the school day actually helps re-energise children and improve their focus back in the classroom. This initiative has been so popular with children and staff that we are now looking to develop a parents’ ‘Mile a Day’ group in the local park.”
