Pay attention if you fuel your car at Sainsbury’s Bell Green

I put fuel in my car today at Sainsbury’s Bell Green. The amount charged at the till was not the same as the price showing on the pump display. It’s not happened to me before. The staff on duty said it was new to them too and didn’t know what to do but did refund the difference.

I’m guessing here: did someone do a runner from your pump just before you and you were left with the bill?

I don’t think that can happen.
But someone may have used the pump while you were on the way to the till.

The quantity of fuel in the transaction was an exact match between the pump and the till.

If you’re interested in repeating the incident, I used pump #12.

I have a printed receipt + a photo of the pump display!

Yes, that’s why it caught my attention. It’s a trivial difference so I was embarrassed to upload the evidence, but I am curious about how this could happen. At the scene I assumed that the pump display was correct and the amount charged at the till was wrong, but it’s the other way around.

The pump display is incorrect in respect of the total owing.

£1.479 X 29.7 litres = £43.93 - the pump shows £43.43

The printed receipt from the till was correct.

could it be a malfunctioning LCD on the 4 digit? One extra segment at the top would make it a 9.

That makes sense, good explanation, simple is best.

The price should’ve been £43.93. Seems like the simple explanation may be the right one.
