Update: Grants for tree-planting in Lewisham

Just received the following from City Hall after enquiring about the tree-planting initiative announced a few days ago:

This winter 2016-17 the Mayor is providing up to £750,000 of funding for planting trees and woodlands in London. Grants were awarded to 2 projects in Lewisham.

The London Borough of Lewisham “Street Trees for Living” programme received a grant of £18,000 to plant 75 street trees and increase local awareness of the value of street trees and identify and encourage volunteers to become trained as “street tree guardians". The street tree guardians will play an active role monitoring, watering and tending the new trees.

The London Borough of Lewisham Beckenham Place Park Regeneration programme received a grant of £39,000 to plant 12,025 trees to increase the area of woodland in the park and make it more welcoming, accessible and valued by the local community. The project is to plant 12,000 woodland whips across a larger park, expanding an area of ancient woodland and placing 25 larger trees across the park landscape. I have attached a poster about their volunteer planting day on Saturday 25th February, in case you wish to get involved or publicise this on your website.

The Conservation Foundation also received a grant of £36,000 to encourage all churches across London to plant at least one tree on church land or to donate their tree to a local school or
community group site. They will plant 660 trees across London, some of which will be in Lewisham.

That is interesting. In Perry Vale ward the council seems keen to replace trees with tarmac and I’ve been brushed off when trying to contact the highways dept about this. I may try to find a way to contact the “Street Trees for Living” programme now.

How about a tree outside @MammaDough? There’s a huge amount of pavement space and it would really improve the view down HOP as you exit the station. First impressions of the area and all that!
