Traffic queues in rush hour - HOP / Stondon Park Junction

The traffic in the rush hour at the junction of Honor Oak Park and Stondon Park is atrocious… traffic lights let 2 or 3 cars through (4 max) … - cars then cause problems by jumping the lights as frustrated at the wait… traffic then goes right back passing Crofton Park Station and also down Brockley Grove towards Ladywell !!! SORT IT OUT TfL !!!

WELCOME TO THE FORUM, MARK !!!

I agree - the traffic at that junction is awful, even off peak on the weekend. Nothing worse than lights that let through just a couple of cars at a time. Should be made into a roundabout in my opinion.

Just a friendly note - I took the liberty of adding “HOP / Stondon Park junction” to your title - hope you don’t mind.

Quick question, did anyone tweet this to TfL? Just they are usually quite good for replying and explaining themselves.
I have seen it like this before though and indeed it’s very frustrating!

I do not think this has anything to do with TfL. Only the red routes are run by them.

The junction is way too small to be made a roundabout. Buses only just make the turn as it is. There is one easy win with this IMO though. From the HOP perspective, change the phasing of the lights so that it is all go before the turn left only filter into Stondon Park. This would mean that there would be fewer occasions when just a few cars get through the lights.

I live round the corner from this junction, so my concerns are for those who have to cross it every day several times on foot. If it were a roundabout, you would have to have crossings on each arm and I’m guessing that would make it even worse for drivers, not better. It’s a very busy junction for pedestrians too, and their safety has to take priority over the smooth flow of cars I think. Unless the volume of traffic is reduced somehow at peak times, then I think the congestion is something that drivers will just have to accept. You can’t squeeze an ever increasing number of vehicles through the same space without some congestion. Given there is no practical way of increasing the space for cars here, increased queues at peak times are inevitable.
