Could a Progressive Alliance win in Lewisham West and Penge?

I think so, and hope to see Lib Dems and Greens working together, perhaps with progressive elements of Labour.

Interesting idea but all in all I think it highly unlikely.

The LibDems would need to return a result similar to their 2010 2nd place success when they took 28.1% of the vote. I’d be very surprised if they didn’t improve greatly on their 2015 result when they dropped to 5th place with only 7.7% of the vote. John Russell is popular locally and will help… but the LibDem leadership lacks the charisma of Nick Clegg and without a public TV debate that national swing to the LibDems has in 2010 will be absent in 2017.

The Greens did well in 2015. Third place but still only 8.5% of the vote, up from a 5th place finish in 2010 with a dismal 2.1%. I’m guessing the Green’s success was down to votes switching from the LibDems in 2015. I did this myself in another constituency.

So if the LibDems could return their 2010 result and the Green Party their 2015 result then a progressive alliance just might beat the Labour candidate. But I’m not holding my breath.

@DevonishForester… I’d suggest this is moved to local politics which I think has more people opted in.

Nick Clegg? Charisma?? Only in comparison with Gordon Brown in 2010…

You may think that now, but his style of presentation along with debate performances put him and the party in excellent stead. I’m convinced the LibDem’s success in 2010 was more Nick Clegg’s success than that of their party manifesto.

I’ll agree with you on that. But he was up against Gordon “I agree with Nick” Brown.

There’s an old joke about him: Gordon Brown is so boring, his Secret Service code name is Gordon Brown.

I recall the debates aka the Brown and Cameron agree with Cleggy Show.
