NCT and alternatives

Now creating message as a new topic…
We’re not bothering with NCT membership, just the classes. Think membership gets you discounts on baby stuff? But we’re getting it all second hand or hand-me-downs (very lucky that two friends have just had babies so we’re pretty much sorted already) so doesn’t seem much point. Seems like the consensus is the info at NCT is the same as NHS, but it’s more local, and smaller groups, so you will get to know people in FH/ HOP, rather than Blackheath. Then you’ll be more likely to meet up with people afterwards, and not have to schlep on a bus. One of my pals said NCT is good because you do your boring baby talk there, sparing your other friends… That said she gets on really well with her group so I don’t know really…
There’s an expectant fathers course at Lewisham that my husband is going to go to. It looks good, it’s an afternoon (Sunday I think) and it’s mid-October. If anyone else is interested, I’m going to the Positive Birth Group in Lewisham (free) https://www.facebook.com/groups/579783085419828/?sw_fnr_id=2105920184&fnr_t=01 but in the daytime. Sounds hippy dippy but really isn’t. The book is amazing and now I’m only a tiny bit terrified of having a baby (it’s my first). More info here http://www.positivebirthmovement.org/

Looks like we’re going to avoid NCT and go with https://www.noobies.co.uk/product/october-forest-hill/ instead. Need to read more testimonials from ppl who’ve actually used it but my OH is quite keen to avoid NCT.

I’m also looking into pregnancy yoga - either https://www.oaktree-yoga.com/classes/ (realised I missed the 1st class today) and the HoP Wellness Rooms one that somebody mentioned on here. Waiting to hear back from them.

Had my 20w scan yesterday so feel it’s all stepped up a notch.

(I’d posted the last message elsewhere and in the meantime have looked up Noobies. Sounds good but is so new I’m worried it won’t have as much of a take up. Choosing harder than anticipated!)

Yeah, it’s really hard. I feel like I’ve been strong-armed into NCT because it’s what ‘everyone does’. Still have heard it’s not as woo woo as it used to be and things like C-Section are covered (when my mum did it and ended up having a C-Section there was a scandal, apparently).
I think it’s good for the first few months before you start getting out and meeting people (fitness classes etc.). Might still be trying to talk myself into why I’ve spent close to £300 though. Is anyone else going to the hypnobirthing taster session in September?

Noobies looks way better than NCT – it covers the ‘after the baby is born’ which, if anything is the more frightening bit. Wish we’d done that one now, but I’ve paid for NCT. Oh well.

Just signed up to that Noobies thing! Do it!

I have my anomaly scan on Wednesday and pregnancy yoga starts tomorrow!

Think I will! Looked at the FAQ and says it’s a max of 8 couples, min 4 so think there’ll be enough of a take up. Is that the Forest Hill one at The Signal?

All the best for your anomaly scan. I got really light-headed during mine because if all the pressing - was putting pressure on the vena cava.

Yes it is the one at the Signal. I havent told my other half yet - he is desperately trying to avoid all things parent related until the last minute. He will have to step up!

I am also at Kings! had a scan there at 16 weeks as I was changing hospitals from Queen Elizabeth. The aftercare wont be at Kings though, it will be at Lewisham Hospital which apparently is better as my friend (and my neighbour who used to be a midwife) say that Kings post-natal care is not that great.

Hope you can get on the pregnancy yoga tomorrow - its at the HOP Wellness Rooms!

Booked Noobies! Feel excited now. And also signed up to yoga tomorrow (9.15am on a Saturday was never going to happen). Could only book onto the 7.45pm one though.
Blimey, all go.
