Waste and recycling over the Christmas and New Year period

Lewisham have published revised dates for bin collections over the holiday period.

They’ve said we can put food waste in our black bins over this period. I have two problems with this: while my food bin might get full, my black bin is going to be even fuller as it hits the two week mark on Boxing Day. So telling me I can put food in it isn’t going to help me manage my food waste.

My other issue is that I think it would be sensible to allow people with garden waste bins to put food in there as a first step, rather than directing everyone to contaminate the black bin. I’ve tweeted them twice to ask about putting food in the brown bin, but no answer yet.

I’m pretty sure the refuse collectors tip the food bins into the garden waste bins, so it would be good if they could clarify.
Also, curious whether Wed 3rd is collection as normal, or they missed it off the list by mistake!

Many thanks for finding that out. I have seen the refuse collectors just tip the food waste into the brown bins anyway, so it would make sense to put extra food waste in there too. My black bin is likely to get full over Christmas whereas my brown bin isn’t too full at this time of year.

I have seen the refuse collectors tip the food waste bags into the garden waste bins. Just do it, I reckon.

I will use my garden waste bin for this as I rarely use it during the winter so at least I will get some value out of it. I find there is a lot of extra waste as I needed to clear the fridge and cupboards of food to make room for Christmas. There is at least twice the normal weekly waste, I should have put a wormery on my Christmas list.
