Best Sunday Lunch

I love the pubs of Forest Hill. But which has in your opinion the best Sunday lunch and why? Parentals are visiting and it must be a good 'un.

My favourite is over in neighbouring SE4.

The Gantry in Brockley is a fantastic little restaurant with a lovely conservatory and garden. You wouldn’t know from the outside, which looks like a small bar:

If you want something slightly fancier than a pub lunch, The Perryvale does an AMAZING Sunday lunch, as long as you have two to share the whole roast chicken.

The Dartmouth Arms does a great roast and the signal great too (kids roast a bargain for older kids).

My parents in law really liked the roast at The Hill. Not top of my list but fine and very good value. The Railway Telegraph also reasonable (but I think has recently changed hands?).

Not tried the roast at The Sylvan Post or the Perry vale (but other food at Perry Vale very good).

Further a field the Rosendale in West Dulwich is fab. The Herne good but not been so recently.

I am super fussy about pub roast dinners and ideally like rare roast beef. The husband can’t stand reheated meat and I have kids that love roast but hate gravy. Yorkshire pudding is a must have in my book. Good luck!

@Satchers - Sunday lunch at the Sylvan Post might be right up your street. Pink roast beef, giant Yorkshire Puds and you can have it without gravy.

I’ll have to try it. I’m afraid I was put off the food in their early days by a caesar salad that had that horrid pre-ground smelly Parmesan cheese from a tub on it! But I’ve heard it’s good now.

All Inn One Perry Vale does an excellent Sunday lunch. Cooked personally by co-owner and chef Richard, beef is beautifully pink, vegetables served on the side and gravy also served on the side, the latter if requested.
Lovely atmosphere, ideal for socialising or just spending an afternoon with the papers.
Children’s play area outside.

Just had a great roast dinner at the Prince of Wales on Perry Hill, they’ve got a new chef working for them. Been a bit disappointed with most of the other places we’ve tried around so hopefully they keep doing them!

@AllInnOne does a corker of a roast. I had the Lamb there and it was cooked to exactly how I like it. Great play area for the kids out the back and a good selection of ales and drinks.

What beers do they do in there? On another topic I wondered aloud why I hadn’t been in there and keep meaning to pop in…

Last time i went in they had fubar and Brains SA plus a few others. Well kept pint!

They often have a good pint of Deuchars IPA - this is a good thing.

Seeing as this is now a live topic again, has anyone had Sunday lunch at the new look Honor Oak pub yet? I’m thinking of gathering some friends to dine, but would love to hear opinions beforehand. Thanks!

We had a roast at the Honor Oak this afternoon.

Atmosphere of the place has definitely improved since last year. The drink selection is better, and a lot of effort has gone in to the entertainment selection. The place was really popular today.

As for the roast, It was decent. My beef was quite chewy & Liz’s had the chicken/beef/pork trio - the pork was almost entirely fat unfortunately. Potatoes not crispy / fluffy. At £17 for the beef and £19 for the trio, it ought to have been better.

Still, the atmosphere makes up for it and we’re just about to enjoy some live jazz

Had roast leg of Welsh lamb at All Inn One this afternoon. Vegetables served on side as standard, gravy served on side as requested.Fluffy potatoes, good Yorkshire pudding. Hot plate £14.

Not £14 for hot plate obviously!

Yes we had Sunday lunch at All In One today and it was very nice. They did gravy on the side if requested. Vegetables were nicely cooked not soggy, with tasty baby carrots. Crispy roast potatoes. The Nut Roast was good - these can be hit and miss, but in this case it was freshly made with a good texture. I thought the price of the food was fair. The staff are friendly, the children could play in the garden and there were some board games too. A very pleasant way to spend an afternoon! Oh and the best thing is being able to get the bus home so no arguing about who has to drive

Locally the All Inn One has been consistently good for the last couple of years for Sunday lunches. Going slightly further afield, the best I’ve had in SE London was last summer at The Rose (formerly the Hobgoblin) at New Cross Gate. Good portion sizes, good choices (including pizza available for kids) and everything cooked perfectly.

I ate at the Rose the other night and the food was outstanding.

Had to mention Sea Salt Beckenham bit outside SE23 but after a great Sunday lunch worth the trip. Bit traditional menu but proper napkins white tablecloths and silver service. Having tried several Gastro pubs locally they could learn a lot on portion size and pricing. We are regular diners and have tried most Michelin starred restaurants as well as local cafes, supper clubs and ethnic variants with a meal for two from £16:00 to £325. My view is if you leave hungry or feel you could have cooked something similar for 20% of the price then you don’t go back

Just a note a small galvanised bucket with 7 chips is not worth 3:95

The London in Rye in Catford do a good Sunday lunch. Had the lamb today and it was great. The all-day brunch is also a winner.

The Hill does a fantastic huge roast at a bargain £23 for two. Unless it’s changed since we last went a few months back, it came with all, and I mean ALL, the trimmings including cauliflower cheese.

No veggies?

As I said to my mum a) they were on the side and b) I did eat them. Honest

Cauliflower cheese is such an under-used but brilliant side

Roast potatoes look good here - last couple of pub roasts I’ve had (Catford Constitutional and Earl Of Derby at The Telepgraph) the potatoes have been undercooked - a cardinal sin in any roast. When something is easy to cook right and well at home you really do need to get the basics right when mass cooking in a boozer.

Any pub that throws a bit of red cabbage, cauliflower cheese or home made stuffing into the mix gets a thumbs up from me.

Good roast potatoes are not easy! They need to be served straight from the oven when ready. If kept warm the insides go smooth instead of fluffy and the crust softens. The best roasties I’ve had with a Sunday roast were at the Perryvale.

We had a really excellent lunch at the newly reopened Greyhound in Sydenham today. They had a full menu as well as roasts (beef, pork or lamb). The food was delicious, the service prompt and attentive, and the general ambiance was really lovely. They were handing out complementary glasses of prosecco for Mother’s Day, which was a nice touch.

The rebuild isn’t quite finished yet - they are waiting for windows for the conservatory and are still fitting out the upstairs room. But the ground floor is lovely, including the restored tiles rescued from the original building. A big thumbs up, well worth the wait.

Has anyone tried The Honor Oak’s Sunday jazz lunch?

Been to the honor oak a few times for Sunday lunch. Portions are big and food is good, service can be patchy and the jazz is no longer on as far as I know

OH says selection was good, including local micro-breweries.

Lunch at Canvas and Cream in the outside courtyard area out back today - veg and beef were excellent, potatoes not quite crunchy enough for my liking, but overall a really good roast:

Definitely the All In One for us. Great roast potatoes, veg not overdone, Yorkshire pudding with every option, generous servings, and they do the only good nut roast I’ve had in recent years.

The roast season is certainly upon us again in full swing. Any more votes for best Sunday roast in the hood and surrounding area? The Greyhound in Sydenham is very good but no table available tomorrow when needed.
