Bird in Hand - which came first?

So which came first; the Bird in Hand Pub or the Bird in Hand Passage?

Important question which arose during a dinner party at a nearby establishment last night.

It is likely that both came at more or less the same time. The map of 1799 shows dwellings there but no passage and hard to tell if there was a pub. The map of 1863 shows dwelling but no passage. The map of 1890 does show a passage and what may well be the pub.

Given road are sometimes named after local landmarks it is possible the passage was named after the pub. An example is the Sun in the Sands roundabout and pub, Swiss Cottage etc. Also the fact that our stations name was The Dartmouth Arms Station originally this is entirely possible.

I did not know that - interesting stuff.

Based purely on conjecture (!) I would say the pub. Only because I think, taken in isolation, Bird in Hand is more likely as a name for a pub.
