Is this a bumble bee?

This HUGE bee was all afternoon in my mums garden…but not flying into the flowers for pollen - but digging holes in her lawn. Bizarre. Not sure what breed it is - it was massive and it’s markings were amazing (stripes of black, gold, black then grey/beige bottom). I’ve no idea why it kept trying to go down holes in her lawn - bees don’t eat ants do they?!! :rofl:
