Linking to other threads / posts

What’s the quickest / most elegant way of referencing another thread in a post? I want to create a new thread and refer to a post in another thread. Apart from the usual hyperlink insertion, is there a short cut for doing this?

Hyperlink insertion is what I normally use, but replying as a new linked topic is also a good way to preserve references between related topics

Also, the developers are currently discussing improvements to the “share link” dialog which look promising.
