After much anticipation:

I thought it had gone the way of many other pubs - good to see it back.

The Greyhound is a great example of a community coming together to right a wrong. The developers ‘accidently’ knocked 85% of it down when they were building the flats instead of restoring it, as they were supposed to. And then tried to do a half-assed rebuild with an unauthorised mezzanine floor that cut windows in half. It was a joke.

Big local campaign brought the developers to court and forced them to reinstate it with all original features. It looks absolutely splendid. The new owners are a small independent chain.

The outside remains similar to the building which was demolished - well, one wall remained, propped up by scaffolding.

There are a few of the remaining Victorian tiles from the original hotel entrance and ‘drinking corridor’ (which some of us oldies have fond memories of) but the interior is now a modern 21st century design.

This will be the third Greyhound on the site - the first was recorded in 1720. This was rebuilt in 1873 and demolished between 2007 and 2013. The new Greyhound will be the next chapter in Sydenham’s history and hopefully will last at least another 150 years.
